2009-10 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

CHICO STATE soccer player Adam Raish was named 2009-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced at the CCAA Executive Council Spring Meetings in La Jolla.
The award is voted on and selected by the Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) of the 11-member institutions.
A senior defender from Hemut, Calif., Raish was a four-year starter at Chico and was a stalwart in the back for Wildcats as they posted a 0.89 and 0.99 goals-against-average in 2008 and 2009, respectively. During his final season, Raish, a three-year team captain, contributed two goals and six assists.
In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Raish was named Chico State’s 2009-10 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a four-year All-CCAA Academic honoree. He was also named the 2008-09 Dr. Hal Charnofsky award winner and selected to the Dean’s List six times.
The Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award is given annually in recognition of CCAA student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom, community and in their sport. The respective athletics department members in consultation with the school’s FARs select and vote on the award.
Raish also made his mark in the community as he was a member of Chico State’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He participated in the department’s “Cats in the Classroom” program and the Construction Management canned food drive.
Raish, who earned a degree in construction management in May, accepted a job with Performance Contracting as an associate project engineer and will began that position on June 28. |

Meg Rolland, Humboldt State (Cross Country, Track & Field))

HUMBOLDT STATE cross country and track and field standout Meg Rolland was named 2009-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced at the CCAA Executive Council Spring Meetings in La Jolla.
A senior from Emmett, Idaho, Rolland concluded a decorated collegiate career this past spring by earning All-American honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase following a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Her time of 10:27.77 bettered her own school record.
Rolland is a three-time All-CCAA selection in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and a three-time national-qualifier in the event. Additionally, she earned all-conference and all-region accolades, and qualified for the cross country national championships.
Rolland also achieved success in the classroom as she will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a nursing degree in the fall. Her list of honors include: 2009-10 Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award recipient; a five-time Humboldt State Presidential Scholar recipient, the Phyllis E. Poska Memorial Nursing scholarship recipient; Robert W. Campbell scholarship recipient; Jayo Family Memorial scholarship recipient; Partnership Campaign recipient and Sue Grigsby Distance running scholarship recipient.
Assisting in the community, Rolland gave her time to volunteering at the 2010 Eureka Public Health Fair, and serving as lead organizer for the Humboldt County Valentine’s Day “Love Run” and organizing two high school track meets.
Following graduation, Rolland is planning a nursing career in a critical care/trauma unit, with the ultimate goal of working in underdeveloped countries. She also plans to continue athletic training.
To be nominated for the CCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, must have a 3.5 grade-point average at a conference institution, completed final season of eligibility and participated in a CCAA-sponsored sport. |
